Welcome! I am Deb Kersey-Tagoe, mother of
Bronwen, who lovingly created the company
Braille-A-Wear in 2006.
When Bronwen was born blind I knew I would
have to use all of the creativity that I had to
find or create clothing that she could enjoy.
I always bought clothes with bows, frills, beads,
velvet, slinky, furry and good to the feel. And of
course there were all those cute tees with cute
sayings on them that I always had to read to her.
It was OK for the time being, is what I told myself. As Bronwen got
older and more independent I began to search for a creative way
to produce a cool, fun and readable tee for the blind. I did not
want to use puffy paint. I wanted a good quality tee that someone
would not hesitate to wear to dinner, school or even work.
So, I chose embroidery and then came across 3-D embroidery. I
lucked out and found a wonderful embroidery company that
believed I had something great and really stepped up to help me.
They purchased a program that enabled me to do braille set up
and proof reading. We now have not only tee shirts, but tote
bags, hats, and bibs.
Braille-A-Wear was up and running by February, 2006. In less
than a year we were featured four times on TV, including CNN
where I got several accounts from blind organizations in other
states.
We were featured in the local newspaper as well. And the
latest......... July 27, 2007, I was interviewed by a radio station for
the blind in Glasgow!!! Our shirts are now going overseas. I
would have never thought this would be such a hit.
Bronwen is my consultant on slogans and colors and of course
she is my favorite sales person. I hope you enjoy our pictures and
find something to your liking.
AND REMEMBER: BE BRAILLE AWARE (braille awareness is
our mission)
OH, AND ONE MORE THING.......... YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE
BLIND TO ENJOY OUR PRODUCTS!
These items were designed to also give the sighted a new fun
and interesting way of expressing themselves, since everything
comes in print and braille, and to help spread the word of the
world of DOTS.
